ok, but could it mean the head gasket has gone/going? i thought that the water would have to be getting into the oil for that?

Depends on where the head gasket has blown as to what kind of a mixture you get, ie water in oil or oil in water if ya know what I mean. I'd just drain both out 1st before I started to worry.

Compression test wont show up a porous head, The XE head was prone to going porous (cracking) between an oil gallery and the water jacket. But brown water just sounds like it hasnt had enough anti freeze in to stop it rusting inside the engine.

Flush it out and re fill it with water and anti freeze

Run FORTE bio-degreeser throught the system and empty it. This will get rid of all the oil crud.

Then as everyone has said, re-fill and see how it goes.

Could be a head off job if it does it again

As everyone has said mate, drain and clean all the water out.
refill and run the car IF it comes back you will need to take the head off and have the head fixed or replace with a new one
