I have 195/50/15 on some 6.5J wheels
would 185/55/15 be the same profile but pull the tyre into the wheel abit more?

the 185 would make the it thinner so it would pull it in a bit but i would go for a 45 profile not 55 if you have problems with rubbing. Someone correct me if im wrong

185= tyre width
55- tyre sidewall height (in percentage of the width)
15= tyre size, i,e for a 15" wheel.
the most important figure to stop rubbing problems is the height figure. the lower the better for clearance to the arch but often a harsher ride quality and less protection from kerbs etc...
also look for a tyre with a sidewall that slopes inwards toward trhe centre of the tyre. some tyres like rainsports have a wide sidewall that angles outwards towards the arch, others like a toyo proxes or goodyear f1 go towards the centre.
