is it just sensor faults that cause the em light to come on?

It comes on if the ECU sees a vaule that is outside its pre set limits or a sensor fails one of its checks. for example If the coolant temperature sensor tells the ECU that the temp is 200 degrees then it will be ignored and the light put on

But certain engine faults can make the ECU put the light on without a faulty sensor, for example a vac leak will make it say that the engine is idling high

there are probably more examples but you get the idea

Probably not related in any way, but. . .

. . .warren sent me an IACV which is didn't know whether it worked it not. Shoved it in, went for a drive, and the EML would randomly come in, but with no symptoms. Normally for about 30 seconds each time (enough to log a fault). Thought nothing of it, thought the ECU might work some magic or something. Anyway, when trying to parallel park outside my house, the throttle stuck open with the EML on. Wouldn't have noticed driving along, because the throttle would have been open.

Could be a similar problem may be?!

Dodgey ICV. But normally you have other symptoms like fluctuating idle speeds and almost stalling when dipping the clutch at junctions.

Should do. 30 seconds is enough to register a log iirc.
