I was thinking this but also hoping its something else.

Last time i checked the compression was good on all four cylinders but cant harm trying again.

If it is the head gasket i think its time for a strip and rebuild.

Anyone shed any light on this?

How accurate are block testers?

Run a compression test on it first.

You can get some crap you put in the headertank which shows if exhaust gases are present due to a H/G breach between the combustion chamber and a water way.

Furry muff! A tiny water gallery breach wouldn't really show up anyway IME but at least you have a decent starting point.

Have you tried having a sniff of the headertank? When the H/G had breached on the X14XE 5 door bus you could phsically smell it! If not, maybe try one of those kits that highlight it?

I assume it is coming out of the exhaust? When I did my old XE years ago it smoked a smidgeon due to build up of shite from oily hands etc on the manifold. It soon calmed down though.

Another though, do you have PAS? The standard PAS pipe runs very close to the exhaust manifold and you may have a tiny pin prick sized hole which would give more smoke at higher revs. Been there and done that! I thought the H/G had gone at about 140 on the M6 toll.

if its been overfuelling for ages and youve bin starting it/cranking it, the cat will be full of fuel etc so try taking it for a run!

failing that block testers are spot on, its either gone or it hasnt as it picks up hydro carbons so theyre either there or not
