I need to get the top mount off of my standard suspension to put on my new shocks, but I can't get it off.

The piston has a 9mm socket machined into the top, and there is a 19mm nut on the piston. When I turn the 19mm nut, the piston turns, and so does the mount with it. If I turn the piston then the same happens again. It looks a bit rusted up so I've squirted a couple of mm's of GT85 in (very much like WD40) to leave overnight.

Are you meant to hold onto the piston whilst turning the 19mm nut like you are with rear suspension? If so, then how are you meant to do this, seeing as the 19mm nut is in a dip and doesn't stick out the top.

Any help very much appreciated, if it comes to it though I'll have to source a bushing and use the mounts on my Spax struts, but they look different to my standard ones.

Anyway, any help with me getting the standard mount off will be very very much appreciated. I can get pictures of anything if required

Didn't think of that mate, top idea! Will see if I can get one at lunch tomorrow.

Really need to get the new front shocks on because the bush on one of the current ones is slowly splitting

Possibly mate, I have spring compressors though so not really a problem.

Will nip to Halfords at lunch, get it sorted in the evening

having them still on the car to loosen them, will stop it spinning around, then undo the two bolts at the top and bottom of the strut, remove and then shoulkd be easier to cradle it between ur legs to undo those last two nuts at the top

That sounds like a good price, will see if there is one of their shops near here I have a 9mm socket (actually 11/32" but close enough) but it's a 1/4" one so have to use a tiny ratchet

Edit: Checked their site and the closest one to here is Swindon, not close enough unfortunately

I tried sticking the mount in a vice which stopped it spinning, but then the metal bit on the top started turning round instead

Mate i have exactly the same problem as you, then realised with the other side if i would of kept it on the car i could of loosened it...

Funny story... My mate had the strut between his legs holding it why i tightened the spring clamps using a cross wrench thing and i was really giving it some trying to tighten it as quick as possible before it got dark - slipped and smacked him full pelt in the mouth. hahahaha was pissing myself... he wasnt.

have you tryed useing a pair of grips to hold the piston between the spring? if you puttin new struts on it it wont matter if u mark the piston? if your plannin on puttin them back on at some poiont then grap the piston as high as u can

Still can't get the thing off

Been doing it like this:

Turns out it's an 18mm nut btw

Broke these trying it one way:

They sell them on Euro Car Parts so wondering whether to just do that.

Just wish I'd have thought of looking on there yesterday, order before 3pm and you get next day delivery They do have a warehouse in Swindon but that's an hour away, may be worth it though.

Going to ring up the motor factors at lunch tomorrow anyway and see if they have them in stock, then I can get it at lunch.

Yeah mate I was kneeling on the strut and giving it everything I had, thought it had moved then realised it was the tool breaking

Bought some spanners earlier for it, only cost about £2.30 though so not too bothered, literally pocket change. Just gonna get a new pair of mounts tomorrow if the motor factors have them, if not then see if I fancy a trip to Swindon Saturday morning

Go to your local friendly tyre place and ask them to nip it off for you with their impact wrench. It will come straight off with that.

Just make sure you have the spring compressed when you release the nut or you might get a ratchet to your face
