I've only just got my iphone 3GS...
but the service is absolutely rediculously bad.
Most of the time I'm at work, I can't even send a text without it saying 'not enough signal'.
Don't even get me started on 3G coverage. Don't think i've seen the 3G symbol once, most of the times its a little 'o' symbol which I believe means GPRS.
Not impressed you pay all this money and 99% of the time you can't do anything with it.
My old crappy orange nokia sitting next to it now has a lot of bars of signal and has 3G coverage

p.s. its not just me, my boss has one too and he's gonna take his back due to how bad the reception is.

Might just be your area then, my O2 coverage has never been bad, most of the time i can get 3G.
I have even got a signal 20 miles away from land sailing to the IOM.
Would of though the coverage in Slough would be ok though never had a problem in High Wycombe.

It may be the building. Whenever I went for a dump in the first floor toilets at work (4 story old building) I hardly every got 3G and had trouble browsing the tinterweb using my old Samsung Tocco. Since I got my E71 I can dump to my hearts content whilst browsing tinterweb in the same toilets...
Needless to say my dumps have taken a lot longer since I got the E71.

dunno, google iphone and 3g...
a lot of people claim their iphone 3gs's get poor connectivity compared to their old iphones.
However, I think my main gripe is how crap 02 coverage seems to be.

Anyone there that has another phone on O2 to compare the 3G signal?
Check the coverage map too, see what O2 claim the signal should be.
http://www.webmap.o2.co.uk/map.asp
O2 3G coverage isn't great though, but it is getting better. Sitting here at home, I can only get 2G GPRS, but my Three dongle picks up HSDPA.

That's what I mean...
The fact that 1 device on another network is sitting there humming along at high speed and your iphone on o2 (you have no choice on network) is stuck on GPRS.

Was your building built in the 70's? Is it lead lined in case of nuclear attack?
Are you walking around dressed in a fall out suit? Are you into S&M?

Yeah EDGE. O2 supply the coastguards of UK and Ireland so majority of the coastal areas in the Irish Sea get coverage

o2s 3g is shite. simples. it happens when networks invest too much into one area, and neglect other areas. then get fined by ofcom for it.
