hi im doing a job this weekend, a headgasket on a 1.4 16v MG its on an '03' plate,
im used to working on the peugeot side of things as i work for a peugeot dealership,
just wanted to know some info on them anything to look out for?
also the person im doing it for said she phoned up a garage and they said she will need a special headgasket? i thought they were just talking rubbish?
should be an easy enough job but if anyone had done one i'd like to know?

to be fair you probs would need the special gasket as it always goes on those crappy mg's.
i heard bout them going within 20,000 miles and not just once many times.
better off getting a higher quality gasket

From what I remember there is a special gasket that's uprated so should last longer, as MG's are uber prone to HG failure.
After that though, my knowledge fails! Sorry lol.

dont know if there the same but older k series engines had long head bolts which screwed near the crank.
i was always told as a "boy" not to drop the bolts down the holes as i can knock the nuts off line meaning sump etc off

pritty easy to work on done 3 now 1 on an mg 2 on a rover all the same engines 1.4 nothing really thats a pain in the arse to do pritty straight forward. as for the headgasket ive only ever had one type and they have been fine for over a year now. you might as well stick a waterpump on it as well for the sake of £20/ £30 the owner will have no troubles for a good 3/4 years from the cam belt or water pump

how much should i charge for doing it?
adamf i know the engine you mean saw one in a freelander i think that had extra long head bolts i was warned about them

any chance you got tightning tourques for the head?
pretty sure our autodata will cover it but ill check

is this the crappy old k series engine (in essance just slightly modernised?)
if so then its a pease of piss tbh mate, shouldn't take more than half a day to do properly as you've not done one before..
just think they are not to far off the ease of doing a TU 16v head gasket

it depends on if they are supplying the parts or if you are really labour roughly £150 ish give or take a bit depends if you get the parts trade and charge them retail

Use a klinger head gasket.
Or a freelander gasket.

Yer my friend got a landrover one put on his and touch wood its been fine since

You can get a modified gasket, I think which is thicker (Can't remember exactly)
Also watch for the head bolts as they go all the way through the block to the sump, and if they aren't done up properly and aligned it will go again.
(This may not be right, but its from what i can remember off a mechanic i know.)
