Are eco tec engines any good? How much of a thrashing can they take? And are they restricted in anyway?
Any opinions??

Do a search within the Help Zone and Modification Advice forum for the engine types "X14XE, X16XE and C16XE" and you should find plenty of information on how much abuse these engines can take and what are the restrictive parts of the system.

All modern vauxhall engines are ecotec units. I have a T reg corsa 1.6 which is an X16XE ecotec unit. All ecotec means is reduced pollutants/better fuel consumption etc. It is still a vauxhall engine underneath, and most higher power vauxhall engines are renowned for reliability. What do you mean by restricted? Most are restricted to 6500rpm in factory spec. But an aftermarket ECU can raise that limit to 7500-8500 rpm.

There fantastic engines. The 1.6 16v is even better than the legendary Redtop 2.0litre 16v.

it is indeed. Vauxhall recorded 155bhp out of the little 1.6 lump, 5 more than the 20xe. Shame they had to smack an induction system on similar to that of a London Tube Map.

Even so the 1.6 produces very little torque regardless of mods.
As for better than the red top? Bullshit! The X16XE has various reliability issues, the red top is a lot stronger, harder wearing and can be tuned to a lot more power.

Also, of course the torque is going to be less. Its only a 1.6, not a 2.0litre.
Dave, 1.6 Engine can be tuned without Forced induction or NOS to around 240-250bhp. 2.0litre i think is max about 300bhp. But your talking BIG money then (kinda like a new scooby money )
The ownly downer on these engines is the lack of torque.

Reliability issues? Cambelt tensioners for a start - even Vauxhalls "fixed" ones still break. Vauxhall just pay people off when this happens to stop people making a big deal out of it.
Also the standard to which the C20XE was built is great. Much more solid block, forged pistons as standard, etc. I know plenty of these with 140K + miles on the clock going strong. The Ecotecs tend to blow up by this point.

I think 110 lb/ft at 4k RPM is quite respectable seeing HP is only 105bhp

hang on Pete, the cambelt tensioner is a faulty item on more than just the 16XE engine! IIRC the 20xe unit also suffered from this!

My point is tuned engines have little torque. Sure with manifolds etc the X16XE can have as much power as a C20XE, but it has much much less torque and needs to be revved higher.
As for a problem with my engine? Other than the oil pump gasket and sump gaskets having been changed, it's been fine. Unlike the X14XE which was in it which was a pile of shite.

C20XE's didn't suffer from faulty tensioners. Other than that it's not as well built or solid as the C20XE. Why get so f*cking defensive?

The cambelt tensioners snapped under warranty. Then nearly snapped again. This was with plenty of regular oil checks! I know you're looking for an arguement Miss Clarkson but you're just gonna have to wait til tomorrow for that

Hmm i see your point. The 1.6 is still a cracker of an engine, torque is not that bad at all, just it would be a lot more helpful if it wasnt in sucha heavy car. The 1.6 Sport weighs nigh on 1450kg. Damn heavy for a small hatch.

IF your going to tune an engine you would do research and realise that there are parts that need changing like cam belt tensioners. And if ur gonna mod it properly you would get decent aftermarket jobbies.
Someone woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning
X20 is good, and the X16 is good. I prefer the smaller, lighter revvy 1600 and 1400 engines.

Torque is ok for a standard engine, it's on tuned engines it's crap.
