As above, lost the keys on the 23rd Decemeber and they've still not turned up. I'm thinking they're possibly in the snow so I'm going to have to wait till it thaws to have a proper look, but if I still can't find them what's the deal with getting a new ignition barrel and lockset? How do you go about changing the ignition barrel? Is there any way of stripping the it down so that it's just a switch for the ignition? But if I do that will I be able to start it due to a lack of the chip in the key?
Or would I be able to give Vauxhall my VIN or something and get a new key cut?

It will run for about 5 seconds until the immobiliser cuts in.
A cheaper way to do it is a lockset, then an ecu and immobiliser chip and ring off ebay, I got that lot off ebay for £20 a while back.

98 on an S, pretty sure it has an immobiliser. Phoned Vauxhall and they've said it's about £100 for a new key.

Aye, think so. I phoned the local dealer up today and they said their 'machine was broken' so they'd need to send away for it. Might try another couple of dealers first though.

scottc1088, is the ecu transponder the bit that sense the chip?

I'd go for a secondhand lockset and transponder.

Am I right in saying I don't need the ECU from the car I'm taking the lockset from?

As far as I know you need the little chip from the key and the transponder behind the steering wheel.
The other option is remove a door lock, Take it to a lock smith for him to cut a key from your barrel. Then all you'd need the chip and transponder without the need to change all the locks.
If you're worried about someone finding the key then change all locks.
The door locks and boot lock are simple to do. For the ignition barrel you need to turn the key to position 1 or 11 and use a small allen key to remove it. If you can turn the barrel it is a 2 min job to swap.
If you can't turn the barrel carefully drill out the centre of it until the copper pins inside are gone then use a screwdriver to turn the barrel.

I'm pretty sure I don't need the ECU since it's an XE ECU I'm using, if that was the case people selling engines would need to include the key surely?

You don't need the transponder then. Just go get a key cut from a locksmith. I did away with my immobiliser when fitting the XE.

I'm pretty sure Vauxhall can just send away for a normal key to be cut without the chip inside it if you go in with V5 or security keycard.

Half of that is rubbish.
To start with, You WILL need the ECU, matching keychip and transponder (keychip inside key, transponder around barrel), Then lock set.
Vauxhall will do the imobliser changing but your need details from the car the key etc came from. If the ECU has wrong signal the car will start and die after 5secs.
Ive been there.
Just read the thread proper, IF your running a XE then your only need the key, but anything with the imobliser/orignal engine then it will!

the ignition barrel surrounds held on with a botl which has no head, kinda security thing, cut it off and the surround will come off then you just fit the new one and new locks to go with it
