Ok guys I am really struggling with the amount of choice out there, my requirements are:

17/18" screen (decent resolution)
4GB RAM
Decent graphics card for AutoCAD/3D modeling

One other thing is that when I took a look at a few in PC World, they are were so so flimsy! I want a laptop that doesnt flex and feels solid.

Any suggestions?

Thats the choice you have with a cheapo, sometimes they seem to have good specs but after a month things stop working and as you said they feel flimsy and break. Just splash out on a macbook pro, mines been bashed about a lot and still wrks fine and looks brand new after a year.

I'd love to splash out, but the 17" Macbook is so expensive I really can't justify it.

Looking to spend around £500.

If you're on a budget and you want a bit of performance check out the Dell Studio stuff.

Id also say the dell for a budget one, forget the old shit they made years ago, the past few years they have been making quality stuff for decent money, have 2 dells in my house both are pretty good and both together cost less than my mbp.

The quality of my £900 Dell XPS is appalling. It sickens me every time I see my sisters Macbook which cost the same. Dells are like Fiats.
