when an engine gets too hot it produces too much nitrates oxygen which is bad for emissions so egr sends gasses back into the inlet which lowers the overall engine temp but isnt great for power. hope this helps

Edges is close - it reduces NOx Emissions - Oxides of Nitrogen - combinations of NO & NO2
As said - pumps some emission back through the inlet to repeat the combustion process. The NOx emissions are inert so help chill the combustion - the reduced temperatures reduce the levels of NOX produced
I work on a similar system referred to a FGR (Flue Gas Recirc) on some of the equipment my work manufacture.

You can place a blanking gasket inside the valve (it has 2 parts so a gasket can be sandwiched)
Or you can buy a sports manifold which doesn't have the ports/channels for it machined into the flange face
OR, you can do both
Be wary - access to the valve on the smallblock XEs is a bit of a bitch

The egr valve can be cleaned, there is a how to on here, or you will find it on migforum.
As already said a bit of a bitch to get to, and be careful with the torx bolts, they can snap off, try to tighten it a shade first, then take it off.
