Whats the worst cause of a misfire? Im guessing fucked headgasket / loss of compression? But would also show signs of blown headgasket?
Looking at a cheap polo with a bad misfire, but hasnt been looked at so could possibly be leads/plugs/fuel filter/distributor or coilpack depending what it has
What is there to look out for to show that it could be something more than general service items
Its a P reg 1.3 polo on 71k

Just asked the owner when it was last serviced and he doesnt know but service book is in the car so obviously he hasnt checked the plugs, leads and sime things first

Removing the plugs would be your starting point, compression test would maybe be the next step.
