A mate of mine has a 1.2 16v Corsa B that had a bad headgasket failure, and the head is noticeably warped. He wants to get it skimmed by approx 0.5mm, but is worried about valve and piston contact afterwards.

The Haynes manual says categorically that you can't skim the X12XE head, and he's also understandably worried as the pistons have valve pockets cut into them, so it's obviously close as standard.

So question is, can you skim 0.5mm off the head comfortably? If not, is it possible to get a thicker headgasket to compensate and stop valve/piston contact?

half a mm is huge in engine terms.

Does the haynes say anything about skimming a 12v head? I done that without issues lol

But to tell properly, you would have to mock the engine up and figure out how much space you have, Not easy to do.

Thanks for the answers guys. Have you, or anybody else for that matter, have experience of skimming the head of a 1.2 16v? If people have experience of doing so then he'll crack on and do it, as it's obviously the cheaper option.

Just checked haynes, It says skimming is not possible on the 12v aswell, And my 12v has been skimmed a fair amount I think.

Should be fine, just turn it over by hand when you rebuild it.
