So I'm refurbing a PC at the moment and trying to install XP on it. Whether I try to install XP either on a SATA or IDE HDD it always seems to freeze towards the end where it says something like "finalizing installation" (can't remember the exact text).
From recollection this had some weird shit going on when I tried to put Ubuntu on it as well, so I'm guessing there is some kind of hardware issue?
It's an old P4 system with 2GB RAM and a IDE DVD-RW drive.
I will probably do a RAM test on it, but assuming that comes up OK could I be looking at a failing motherboard here? The PSU is fairly new BTW (400w) and I've used it in some other desktops with no problems.

Yup, i'd either memtest86+ or reinstall on each stick and see where you get. Guessing you've done shift+f11 when the installation hangs to see the error?
