Hi all,

been looking at getting myself a new bike, looking to do road riding rather than DH mountain biking.
Fancy a change and road riding being cheaper option for me atm.

seen that the single speed road bikes are becoming quite popular. i rode one today and they are really nice/light/cheap and just seem to fit the bill. £350 brand new

even the single speed seems a nice pace to go for a tidy pace ride on if needed and fancied a change from just commuting with it.

went on one of these today quite funky

so started looking on ebay and seen a few others for the same price or slightly cheaper.

They have advantages and are a lot of fun to ride, I have a shitty old single speed commuter bike I acquired from work as well as my track bike which I wouldn't dream of using on the road
This is mine (before I fitted brakes and new chain) I want to put road bars on it really.

I prefer riding fixed to my geared road bike tbh.
Can get a 2011 specialised langster for £399 for tredz gez, http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Specialized-Langster-2011-Road-Bike_37670.htm

Simple to maintain for a start, less to wear component wise, a lot lighter than a bike cluttered with derailleurs etc, with the right gearing I find them a lot easier to pick up speed easy, so easy to bomb off in traffic, only problem is obviously your top speed is rather limited

They are just a fad. I wouldnt bother myself. I can see the price being the big selling point but that wouldn't sway it for me.

Fixie's are for >These People< and are a pain in the arse, unless you happen to live somewhere flat.

People trying to be cool and failing have single speed.

If you were bothered about weight you could lose more weight off your body than you could off the bike!

I fail to see how you can slate something you've never tried, they are great fun to ride! I wouldn't be buying into the hipster style shit.

How are they any more fun than staying in the same gear on a normal bike? I'm not disagreeing, just curious.

It's one of those things you have to experience to understand I think. I find it more exciting and challenging to have to give it some to get up hills and being able to shoot off from traffic lights with ease, I didn't get it til I rode one. You also get a better feel for the conditions, you don't always need to use brakes for example, you can force the pedals back to slow down. Many cyclists I know use them as training bikes, and whilst I've yet to experience it they're supposed to be good at handling winter conditions also.

can't see why people are getting their hairs up over this

its a bike.with one gear.??

i could get an all black one so it doesnt stand out. doesnt bother me.

its a bike thats easy to commute on and its cheap to maintain.

i dont want to look like a cunt on a proper road racing bike just to pop to places with, its something that is still fast enough with the thin tyres and is light and easy to ride

The cheap to maintain argument would carry some weight apart from the fact that road bikes with more gears are cheap to maintain anyway. It's not like a mountain bike where they get battered and abused so need constant maintenance.

but i'd feel stupid leaning right over the bars on a road bike.

this is more of a slower pace, easier to ride

Maybe you should do a bit more research in to bikes. You can get hybrid bikes without drop bars so you sit up on them.

Hybrid is the way I would go also. You can get some real sporty looking ones these days too so you won't look like a tool.

Something like the above picture would be ideal. But I don't want to spend a lot on one.
That's why I've looked at the single speed ones. Fits what I need it for. I'll have my DH bike for my proper enjoyment
