I've been trying to work out how this works and have concluded it must be some pretty bare-bones programming going on.

Looks like it's drawing the pixels/vectors rather than using assets?

It's just a port of Gameboy emulator, so it loads ROMs same as the desktop varients, to JS with HTML5 handling the drawing. If you're really interested then have a look at the project on GitHub https://github.com/grantgalitz/GameBoy-Online.

Just tried Austin Powers, didn't know it was from Rockstar.

Fucking it was shit! Took forever to get to the games and one was Paper, Rock, Scissors

They've got a "bespoke" mobile version too.. Just went to it on my iphone and it's got a little controller to use.. horrendously slow though..

my speakers go mental when I close the tab

I have to double click the top left corner on the tab underneath to stop it.
