Before we go any further, I really don't have much of a clue about computers these days so please only explain things in layman's terms!

Around 6 months ago I had an issue where the computer would randomly slow down during even simple web browsing tasks etc. Then it would either just crash or in some cases blue screen. Eventually it got to the point it wouldn't boot, just kept saying there was a boot error and to ctrl, alt, del to restart which did nothing but bring up the same message.

I decided to try a new hard drive with fresh windows install which up until now seemed to do the trick, but now I've got exactly the same issue as before (although it hasn't got to the point where it won't boot up at all, it's more intermittent at present)

During the initial boot up the motherboard does beep once which I've always taken to be an indication that all the hardware is found present & working correctly?

Is it a fluke and this second hard drive is starting to fail or is it more likely to be the motherboard on its way out? (or something completely different)

Cheers,
Rich

If its doing it after a fresh install that would normally indicate hardware failure and it could be a few things, not just the motherboard.

Is it in work? If you're using in a dusty environment I'd be checking the fans and see how hot processor / graphics etc. are running.

No it's my home PC and isn't dusty - infact I gave it a thorough hoover last time around when I replaced the hard drive too.

Are there any ways to carry out tests to try and narrow down which bit of hardware it may be? I just assumed motherboard as the hard drive is new but guess RAM etc could also cause issues?

Could be anything from current information but a hard drive is as likely to fail on day 1 as it is at 3 years old so wouldn't rule that out because it's been replaced.

How old is the machine? I'm just wondering if it's affected by the Cougar Point P67/H67 SATA degredation bug.

I would download CoreTemp and keep it open and monitor temperatures as well.

Machine is around 2-2.5 years old iirc, was a custom build by Sam on here

Will D/L CoreTemp now - the sides off the PC atm for ease of access to it all - I've found that on some occasions by removing then refitting the SATA lead to the HDD it will work again?! Should I refit the side for now though?

This is why you buy a dell with 3 year warranty btw and not some custom built thing.

Have you tried using a different SATA port and/or changing SATA cable?

If you have got a bodged chipset, then using something like HD Tune and looking at the 'Smart' values of the drive will alert you to that.

Have you got a list of components (CPU, motherboard, GPU, ram etc)? Use CPU-Z or PC Wizard (or similar).

If there is anything iv ever asked its going to have been pretty obscure or at least semi advanced. The stuff Andrew and Sam ask is literally amateur stuff let alone someone operating it as a profession.

Sam built(s) budget PCs. There is very little money in it, if any at all.

Pow, just remember, you will bump into myself at shows and events.
