I have a sub with a peak of 1200 watts and a a rated input of 350 rms, my amp is rated at 1600 watts peak and 500 watts rms normally. I know that my car won't be allowing those sought of outputs cause of battery voltage but if i turn it up really loud will i be over powering my speaker and if so will i notice before it goes 'POP'?
Cheers, Sparco

U got more chance of blowing a speaker by underpowering than overpowering mate.

so even if your gain is set at idle/zero there's still a chance of blowing it when the volums is up?

All the gain does is amplify the signal coming through the RCA leads before it is properly amplified. Its used for balancing the loudness in the system.
You can blow a sub by underpowering it or seriously overpowering it, or you can blow it up due to lack of current, distortion, and basically just running the shit out of it

Usually it will sound like ass if youre overpowering it OR if its in the wrong box. No real indication beforehand if the coil will go into melt down though. DONT be affraid to overpower sub woofers, so long as its 'clean' undistorted signal. I fed my 15" Type R rated at 500RMS a full 900WRMS for absoloutley AGES! The coil never even fried because it was a clean un-clipped signal, however the Nomex spiders tore in two with an Ashanti track - 'baby' and wrote the woofer off. Luckly Alpine are SOUND when it comes to warranty claims...

cheers lads, only problem i've got now is that when its up loud all the car lights dim in time to the music....doh!
oh and thats only one sub, got another of the same to go in aswell so will that make it better cause the amp power will be split between two subs?
Now gotta upgrade and amp mids and tweeters cause all i can hear now is boom boom boom....lol!

Of course it will sound bad if you seriously overpower it!! Subs have mechanical limits, they usually reach them before the coil burns out. You ever heard a voice coil bottoming out?

My mate was overpowering his DB audio raptor by 400wrms and it sounded lurrrrvley. And yes ive heard a voice coil go and did an autopsy afterward!

My old fifteen had 400wrms over its stated amound and also sounded loverly but you need a small box to keep it under control. Subs can 'flap' when they are over-powered and that makes them sound bad.
