What does the condition of the spark plugs tell you about how the engine is running



Three of them had a white crusty/chalky coating on them

The other one was black and greasy



I assume they should all be fairly clean if all is well.


(plugs have about 5000 miles of use on them

should be a off tan colour

if they are black = running rich
white chalky = running to lean (can cause damage!!!!)

Its fucked anyway according to my compression test results

If its black and greasy then Its probably oil, which means piston rings or valve stem oil seals have gone on that cylinder

black sooty is rich

black geasy is oil
