Probably just wear on bearings etc leading to play, mileage on the engine?

If theres a leak somewhere, the oil pressure will more than likely be reduced... which may lead to excessive wear/tapping.

Oil leaks dont really reduce the oil pressure but old oil and a blocked filter will cause it to tap more. But then again on an older engine the valve lifters will probably be a bit worn. Change the oil and filter and if that doesnt cure it then its best just to live with the tap IMO

Had a listen to my engine last night, and the tapping sounds like it's coming from the right side of the block, as you look at it. There is an oil leak that looks like it's coming from the bottom end, but i've been topping the oil up/ checking regularly. Any more ideas?

you could put in a slightly thicker oil to reduce the tapping noise. will more than likely be just wear and tear.
