on the gauge it goes up and down from 90 to 100 when the heaters are on hot it stays quite low temp really confusing!
any ideas people?

sounds like an early head gasket or your fan aint kicking in at right time to cool it down again but if the fan is coming on i would think about head gasket tbh when heaters are on it takes the heat away from the engine through heater matrix

no i dont think the fan is coming on it hasn't long had the head gasket done.

You could risk blowing a head gasket by letting it run to 100 and see if the fan comes on. personally i would rather spend £12 on a gasket and THEN see if the problem persists, just to be safe. £12 is nothing
