Measured up the oak trunk I've got for milling today. It's about 3.5m long and 1.2m diameter. Be a few planks come out of this

You gong to cut that up with that little saw?

We used one of these to cut up a big oak and make a veranda for my mum

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

When you're making the table top, are you planning on running it through a planer thicknesser? I'd like to give furniture making a go one day, but that's one tool I don't have access to.

That was only on there for scale really. It's got an 18" bar on and I'd need about a 42" bar to get through that

There's a saw mill nearby that's hopefully going to buy it and they collect too. Not sure on the exact logistics of it all yet with it being down a narrow lane and across a field

If the timber is already planed all round, which it looks to be in this case, just sanding will take care of the top as long as you do a decent job of jointing it up.

Yeah decent joins and then a sand to remove any blemishes and any excess glue.
I'm gutted I should have started this already and have updates but I can't get in the workshop ATM and my shed isn't big enough lol

Yeah, just planed up stock from timber merchants. Got them to put it through treatment plant though so should last.

3x3 legs, 3x2 rails, vt&g (backyard gate stuff) and some bits of decking I had left over for the bottom. Rails are tenoned into the posts and rebated to take the boards. Really nice to make, I'll probably make a couple more for my house when the weather gets a bit better.

Thanks.

I'd like to make some to sell but by the time I've bought the timber and treated it they would cost way more than most people would pay, even with me only taking a modest amount for labour.

I've just got a guide rail and base for my circular saw so I'll look at making some furniture in the summer, fancy a new tv unit, shouldn't be too hard.

Just stuck some more pics in my garage too.

Did you like my shameless "look how good my scribe and mitre is" shot.

Too long, I started early '98 so 14 years. I mainly work as a subbie on sites now, those pics are some private work I did about 18months ago after I was made redundant.

Right update, i finally managed to get some time in the workshop

First ripped up the boards of oak into the sizes i need:

Boards laid out roughly how i wanted them, 100/140/100/140/100mm:

Next was to join them together using the festool and glued with Titebond II:

Clamped up tight and level, then excess glue removed with a damp cloth:

Cut and worked out one side of the legs and dry fit test:

Glued and clamped up:

Once top was dry, sanded down to remove saw burn marks then added a ever so light chamfer to the edges:

That was all i could do at that point as i had to wait for the legs t dry so i could do more work on them.

So i just knocked the old dear up a Solid Oak chopping board with a bit i had lying about, still needs a few coats of Olive Oil but u get the idea:

Looking good. How are you thinking of fixing the top to the legs?

Domino looks a great bit of kit, just a shame it comes with a Festool price tag. I'm after the TS55 plunge saw, £450 inc vat You can get the Dewalt and two rails for £200 less though, not sure the Festool is £200 better.

I'm thinking of making and selling the chopping boards treated or un-treated.
