The headgasket can only go on one way correctly as the wrong way and the oil feed in the middle of the block doesn't line up correctly, and no you can't put a head on backwards cause the timing gear wouldn't go on. unless it's a SRE reverse head, but they don't grow on trees.

I've used the same twice now with no problems so far, there's not that much torque through them.
The other give away normally is the dowels in the block mean it will only fit on one way round too.

the gasket can still physically fit back to front up side down or both but its obvious about the head no one is that stupid

Well, no you shouldn't be able to put it on the wrong way in theory, but you'd have to be partially sighted, line up the oil feed and it will be right.

Well when you took the head off was the gasket the right way round?
Was it a NEW or a secondhand head?

either the block is warped or a faulty unit, try another gasket and make sure when you put it on that all the water and oil ways match up etc and torque it down correctly in the right sequence

there is no 100% accurate way while it is in the car but you can be 99% sure with a metal ruler and fellur gagues put the ruler accros the block and see if you can get the gagues under

You can also do this and shine a light from behind (torch is good) and see if any light is coming from under the rule.
