On Vista, there's no power button in the Start menu, it's never been there, but there's one on my mum's laptop which is exactly the same.
Where will the option be to turn it back on? I'm bored with having to log out and then close down every night

is it not at the bottom of start menu next to the search area 3rd box with the arrow on then shut down?

In the Start menu search box type Power Options, then click on Change Plan Settings on the power plan you use.
Go to Advanced Power Settings and click on Power buttons and lids and then Start menu and power buttons, select the shutdown option.

The button isn't there at all, I've changed that option, but it did nothing

Hmmmm ive looked on vista help and it says bottom of start menu next to the lock button.if it aint there i would get in touch with where you bought it mate.

you could try disabling UAC?
