i have a early c16xe until today it was running loverly now its got a load tapping noise that comes and goes when hot has anyone got any ideas of what it could be

Has it had a timing belt, and water pump done in is recent history? Is the noise a tappet noise, or is it near the cam casing? Obviously you have checked the oil and the water, but is there oil getting to the camshaft alright?
Could it be just injection noise, or is it a louder, like a dry or worn hydraulic lifter? Try and trace it to see if it is along the head, or down nearer the block.

it seems to be in the centre of the head at the front and yes it sounds like a warn tappet and its quite loud but it comes and goes and has only started tonight
