I've been wanting to get a new 40" LCD for my living room and had decided to go for this Samsung LED - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-UE40C5800-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B003DNSJ0E/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IELT8A7Q7IPKV&colid=1EX211JC26UX1

But today Amazon sent me an email offering this Sony - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003BVI4C6/ref=pe_13961_23028851_as_txt_2/

As far as I can see both TVs offer pretty much the same features, except one is LED and the other isn't.

I want to buy something that looks great, but is the LED really worth an extra £150 over the Sony?

Only difference I could see in store was the depth, not anything in the picture.

Saw an advert last night for a Samsung 40" tv for £349, was at Tesco iirc.

LED TV's are awesome, you can see the picture from almost any angle and the colour definition is superb!

I'm holding out for AMOLED TV's

Hmm, I really tempted to just splash out the extra and stick with the Samsung.

Its what I wanted all along.....

I did see some offers for cheaper stuff, but I really want Freeview HD built in, and internet if possible.

I'll take a look in John Lewis tomorrow, they've got both on display and I'll look for myself.

It's an LCD LED BACKLIT. An LED backlit LCD panel doesn't instantly mean better viewing angles, colours or contrasts/blacks, it depends on the LCD panel. You also need to look at the coverage of the LED backlight, some displays are lit from the sides whereas other displays use columns/rows of LEDs across the full width/height of the LCD panel - stating the obvious, the latter option tends to provide a more even lit picture.
Only broad comment you can make about LCD LED is that they tend to be a fair amount thinner, but tbf that means squat.

Personally i'd for the Sony out of those, it's a pretty decent panel (viewing angle is a little limited though, but it's not a huge issue) and at that price it's a steal. Otherwise, i'd really look into the Panny's, something like the V10/20 series if you've got the cash or the G10/20.

Some people don't have a clue

I've had an LED torch for years, anything with LED's in it can't be a big deal.

Exactly!
IIRC, they did trial using LEDs for consumer panels but i don't think they ever got into production. There are LED video-walls which use clusters/segments of reg, green, blue leds though.

It annoys me on these LED backlit TV's that they put the connection sockets pointing towards the wall so you have to have it 2 inches away from the wall to get the HDMI cables etc in. Defeats the object of having paid an extra £150 to have the TV itself 2 inches thinner.

They must not all be the same but all the samsungs i looked at today in currys including the one I posted were like that. Some connections were on the side but not the main ones like hdmi in, optical and aux.

Found these which would do the trick for one of the HDMI's but as they're above eachother you wouldn't be able to get the other 2 in.

Quick update. Had a look at both on display in JL today. Samsung looked lovely, the extra contrast in the lights and dark was obvious. And how slim it was!

That said, the Sony still looked great and I liked the playstation style menus. I'll go for that and save myself a wedge.
