Basically, a few weeks ago, the 'coolant low' warning came on the dash so bought some coolant and topped it up to the maximum. Ran it for about 400miles and it came on again, it was just about minimum so topped it back up again. Ran it for another 400odd miles and it came on for a 3rd time. This time when I removed the header tank cap, it de-pressurised and the coolant raised up from min to max.

Thought nothing off it, jumped back in and continued driving. Warning came back on 30 miles later and was doing the same pressurised thing!

Any ideas?

The car is not losing coolant as there is none on my driveway or road when its left for a day or two or even after I've parked up for a while.

Baffled.

Try bleeding the coolant system to get rid of any air. Run it upto temp with the cap off. Leave overnight, top coolant up when cold.

Mums mondeo was doing this. The head had cracked and water was going into the engine, then returning to the coolant tank when it was turned off.

Her car was also running fine while the problem was occuring, no loss in power or anything. Then she was driving home and her car just died and wouldnt start again.

Will try this tomorrow after work.

Remove cap
Run to temp
Cap on
Turn off engine
Leave overnight.

That the right order?
