I'm thinking about ripping out the fireplace in my lounge and replacing the carpet with wood flooring.

One thing I'm concerned about is that the rest of my flat is carpet (excluding kitchen/bathrooms which are tiled).

Where the hallway meets the lounge, won't there be a step if the hallway is carpet and the lounge is wood floor?

step? just get a wood floor to carpet strip to connect the 2.

will depend on thickness of wood flooring your getting and also use of any underlay

Cheap flooring tends be 4mm to 6mm while more expensive flooring can be 8mm to 12mm thick

If your getting proper wood flooring it maybe thicker again

You might get complaints from the neighbours with wood or laminate in a flat.

Personally I hate it.

It'll also say in your lease you can only lay carpet with underlay. You may need to seek freeholder permission to lay wooden flooring/laminate with adequete sound insulation.

To answer the question you can get threshold strips that join carpet and wooden flooring.

There is no-one underneath me, other than the underground parking

Under my carpets is concrete, so surely there shouldn't be any issues on that front?

Oh no that find then in that case im guessing its a modern block of flats with concrete slabs on each floor! It only applies to older flats where they had timber suspended floors.

I think the flats above me aren't concrete, it's just because I'm at the bottom.

The flat is about 12 years old.
