I've never done it but I've had friends that have. I don't think primer is used on an engine block. I guess because it will be difficult to find a high temperature resistant primer or because it doesn't matter so much about the finish, dunno.

Anyway, make sure you use a temperature appropriate paint. I think most people use a brush to apply paint to an engine block.

First engine I painted (c20xe) I used proper engine lacquer paint in black and came up really shiny after a couple of coats but started to peal in places then for my second engine (c20xe) again I used just normal silver hammerite and it's mint lol, still all on and not pealed once.

I brushed both of mine but spraying would obviously make a better finish. I didn't want the hastle of spraying bits
I didn't want spraying as I didn't take my engine apart so I brushed it.

Hope this helps mate.

I used the same as Dan second time round, used VHT spray the first time which lasted really well and had a good finish. Only reason I used different stuff the second time was because I liked the finish I saw on Shaun's corsa at a meet

Ive only ever had a good lasting finish with smoothrite, needs to be realy clean first and it will last for ages. spary or brush on both work great.
