I finally need to redevelop my dad's website and would like to build it on the Wordpress platform. Current website is http://www.akbrickwork.co.uk

Can anyone recommend some Wordpress hosting? http://www.wordpress.org give a few options but these seem to be US based - is this an issue?

Also, can I presume that this is the simplistic way to build a Wordpress site.

1) Download Wordpress

2) Run the server side installer and install Wordpress

3) Build the website

4) Point 123-reg Control Panel for domain to new server?

Tsohost or Vidahost; use a mixture for personal and clients and yet to have an issue with them and support is spot on from both.

Edit - Most cPanel/Direct Admin (other 'panel') hosting tend to have a 'one-click' installer for popular web apps and software; it's certainly the case with Tsohost (uses softaculous; installer icon is towards the bottom of the cPanel page)/Vidahost.

Edit 2 - There's been a handful of Wordpress threads on CS, so it's worth doing a search for any info. Although if you need themes then look at themeforest.net, wpzoom.com, themify.me and elegantthemes.com.

agree with Dom and would also vouch for Vidahost, absolutely spot on support at all hours of the day!

Its pretty easy to get up and running, as Dom said its one click action if they have the web installer scripts or if not, you simply create a database with a username and password (all one click type stuff in cpanel), manually upload the wordpress files to the website and run the install, i.e www.mydomain.co.uk/wp-admin
The install will only ask for the database details you've just created (name/username/password) and a name for your website and your done.

Themeforrest and Codecanyon contain some great plugins and themes for Wordpress, all at good prices (~£5-£20)

So when you say upload the WordPress files, is that the general files for the CMS or the entire site?

I would imagine the site is built on the server through the CMS once installed?!

wordpress is the entire site.
Your pages and text are not stored as files, but just text in the database.

Yes, the site is built through the wordpress interface once installed.

I've just done this for the wife and used Tsohost and wordpress. Really impressed what I am managed to do by modifying different templates and plugins.

I use Azure, but you could just use wordpress.com and pay for any upgrades you need like a custom domain name. Saves the hassle of hosting it yourself.

Can you do that even if you havea domain? Ours is registered with 123-reg?

I guess it would be similar to the set up we have with Google Sites?

Yes, you could host your site on wordpress.com but point your domain www.mydomain.co.uk to myblog.wordpress.com and even retain the mydomain.co.uk address in the URL.

Yes, but you have to use one the their themes and their plugins. If you need lots of customisation then self-hosted is better, but .com is a bit easier.

You just need a LAMP stack which is pretty standard issue these days. It'd run on their Business package which isn't badly priced: https://www.123-reg.co.uk/web-hosting/business.shtml

Personally i wouldn't touch 123-reg hosting having heard a few stories from clients. And 'Unlimited Bandwidth' just means there'll be a lovely FUP attached and from past experience (my run in with Heart Internet a few years back), FUP's tend to make the package rather restrictive.

Yea, 123 Reg are bollocks IMO - wouldn't use them or Webfusion again.

Azure has a really nice user interface, it's just easy

I had a little go on AWS and VPS.Net and didn't really like them on the basis of their control panels. Having a difficult UI is actually quite a big deal when you think about it.

Took out the packaged where I can have 5 sites, in case I do any others. Forgot to use the CS 10% code though
