My Dad turned his PC on yesterday and got as far as logging in. He then left the pc and when he came back it had gone in sleep mode. The problem now is that it won't come out of sleep mode. Holding the switch in will turn it off but pressing again to turn on will just go back in to sleep mode. Hes tried the usual unplugging etc but its still in sleep mode.

Has anybody got any ideas how to turn it on? Hes looked on the Dell support website.

Does anything come up on screen when he turns it on?

By sleep mode I assume you mean the power led flashing green?

Flashing orange isn't sleep mode.

Flashing orange is power distribution problem.

If you want to troubleshoot it you could get it down to 2 components.

Could be anything causing it, most likley psu.

Remove all external peripherals 1st of all, could be a dodgy mouse or anything causing it.

Open it up, remove memory, cables from hard drive, cd drive, floppy drive if it has one, try and power it on again, if you get the same issue and non beeps etc its either motherboard or power supply.

If you are still in warranty and have done all they steps dell will replace both.

Depending on warranty they might want to collect the system, fix it then give it back.

What did they charge?

I've heard 85 quid being branded about a few times from dell themselves and at least one of the service stock places.

Quote from dell for just a psu with an engineer would have at a guess been not much under 200 quid.

Not a lot of people know that it's pretty difficult to fuck up putting a PC together. At work we take about 5 mins showing the new people how to assemble them
