Car is fireing on 3. Did a compression test and compression is 200lbs in 3 cylinders. In number 2 cylinder it wavers, for example - test it gives a read of 90lbs then up to 140 then test again 180 then test again drops back down to 90. Is this a sticky valve or we talking a piston ring going. If its the piston ring then surely it would smoke its tits off and it doesn't.
I am at a loss, Any one know
Cheers

Pass?
200PSI is about factory figures, thats what my old C16XE made.
I assume you are doing it with all the plugs out, at WOT and cranking until the needle doesn't move anymore?
If the test is being done right there is nothing for it but to pull the head off, just getting the upper plastic inlet manifold off is an utter arse due to access to the rear of the throttle body!

get a leakdown test done, that will show the true compression loss and the cause all in 1 go.

Cheers Dave. They just phoned me now and they are in the process of taking the head off as we speak, then they are gonna give me a call and let me know the damage.

maybe the thing isnt holding compression because the area that the bit sits in around the top of the spark plug hole is dirty so isnt holding an air tight seal

That wouldn't cause a loss of compression though, plus it would soon get nuked during combustion.

rings lining up is very common on bike engines
its where the 2 compression rings align there gaps you know you got to stagger the rings to keep compression well they can sometmes mov and align with each other causing loss of compression.

I have never taken a high mileage engine apart that doesn't have the gaps inline.

Yeah they are going to skim it and pressure test it then new gaskets all round and then new cambelt rollers and tensioners and new oil and what not.
