Sounds like a massive airleak somewhere after the airflow meter.

Any fault codes?

Have you tested another Air Flow Meter?

Check the plug to the Air Flow Meter, if the wiring on the plug has perished then you will have problems.

Gently peel back the rubber sleeve and check all the wires are intact. It will have to actually severe before the eml will come on so worth checking.

check the spark plug tops, my early xe did the same thing and it was down to the twistable tops being loose, also check breathers for blockages..

Try squeezing the air pipe to the ICV when the car is running....the car should stall when the airflow is completely restricted.

If it doesn't, you have an airleak somewhere...

You know it could just be something simple like new plugs and leads...

Well its worth checking the condition of your spark plugs. My guess is they will be black and sooty. And stinking of fuel.

Check the wiring to the CTS. Again, peel back any sleeving and look for perished wires.

Disconnect the AFM and try to drive it. Im not saying the AFM is at fault but if you have an air leak after the AFM then unplugging it would fix the problem and might help you decide whats wrong

If your car runs better with the AFM unplugged then there has to be an air leak somewhere.

Check all the little breather hoses, like the one from the FPR to the throttle body and all the others around that area...look for splits in the pipes...

Also, can you hear any abnormal hissing from the throttle body area?

ah check the intake hose, you know the little one that comes off of it... Mine was leaking from the joint.. Good way to check for air leaks is have the engine running and spray wd40 around any hoses or joints... Will run like crap if it finds a leak.
