Looking at building a box for a subwoofer, but need to know what sort of volume I should be looking at?

for either a 10" or 12" sub?

Have a search on the net.

There is a program about that gives you calculations, and works out the volume that is needed for a certain sub.

Also, each sub requires a different volume. Brands such as Audiobahn come with a sheet that tells you the volume needed and/or any ports that are needed
