Fitted a new pattern cambelt today and tensioned it bringing the pointer round to the "new" belt mark, but its whirring noticably louder than the old belt used to

Is this just because its a new belt or is it too tight still?

check the rollers and tensioner for play in the bearings, if there is none, check the water pump.
then slacken it off a TINY amount,
if its still doing it get a genuine full timing belt kit

The tensioner/idlers and pump arent very old... they all had no play and smooth as butter
