Or, has someone tied a bag of spanners to your rear bumper?

Knackered wheel bearing, no oil, loose auxillary piece, could be anything out of a thousand things.
What part of the car is it coming from?

if it does it all through the rev range then i'd say water pump or timing chain or idler pulley or tensioner or alternator (dont know if the 1.2 had a chain or belt)
Easyst way to identify where the noise is coming from is ether to buy a stethescope(sp) or have a long screw driver and put it on different parts of the engine and put your ear to the handle end. You will be able to determin what part is making the noise

I have been thinking lately the exhaust might be blowing, i will have alook over the weekend. It sounds like metal bouncing off metal, like the exhaust hitting something

Hi Rich
As far as im aware it doesnt do it through the rev range, just pulling away (or when start to reverse)

if its only when you start to pull away or when you start to reverse i'd say its more likely something to do with the gearbox, maybe even cv's
