So here is my predicament....this has happened once before and i used an electric die grinder to just go through it...but as seen as its happened to 8 bolts..i don't fancy wasting the time. Anyone got any ideas to getting these off quickly?

Also, no idea how they snapped, they are all torqued up correctly, even to the specific angle!

Bad times

Drill them out and helicoil is the only thing i can think of. Dont know if its suitable for head bolts though due to the amount of torque?

I've tried drilling before and i snapped so many different bits! any recommendations for a decent drill bit? Plus i won't need to re-tap because i just need the caps of the bolt off and then the head will lift off the actual shaft of the bolt just unscrews normally by hand when there is no compression on it!

Just use a drill bit that will go down the centre of the bolt once you get to the washer the tension should snap the top of the bolt off and then you can just un wind the bolt with your finger tips.

I ended up getting the ball end of an allen key snapped off in a female headed head bolt once a dormer HSS went through the bolt no bother

hey there mate,

I tried to reply to this earlier but was on my phone!

It has been a long time since i have worked on a Vauxhall engine so i am a little unfamiliar with how the head bolts are. But by looking at those photos it looks like you have a small area of the bolt head to work with?

This happened to me once (on a honda) and i went out and got these things from a company called IRWIN. They are a large pitch reverse razor taper socket. You donk the cap onto the top of the damaged head and as you tighten the socket the bolt comes out. It has not failed to remove a damaged bolt i have come across yet.

The only other thing i can think of is...

Did this happen whilst tightening the head down?

Its all right mate, thanks for coming back to it.

Yeah its a small area to work with, and i have got 8 to do...! This happened when i was unscrewing the bolts (well trying to at least). Like i said, its happened before, but only on 1 bolt....which is annoying, and that came off in time with an electric dremel, but that took forever and i don't fancy doing that for 8 bolts!

Do you have a link to this tool your suggesting?

Cheers

I think that is what you mean? If so, any good? Looks like they are worth a shot!

Thats the one!

Perfect! I can not fault them in any way! They are not overly cheap but they have loads and loads of uses. They have not failed to remove any rounded or locking bolt i have come across.

I found these after trying numerous suggestions from other people, Stud extractors, reverse threaded sockets and numerous drilling products which all failed.

With the irwin sockets you just place them on top of the damaged bolt and tighten them (anti-clockwise) and they will dig into the bolt head. Sometimes you can hammer them down to get a bit more grip on the bolt head. Just make sure when you tighten the socket onto the bolt you keep the pressure across the socket level. Then they should come straight out!

If you were closer i would have lent you mine! Screwfix sell them, think i paid about £20 for them or there abouts but i use them so many times! Has certainly saved me hours of fumbling with broken bolts

Be wary mate, I got the set that you'll be looking at and they're all 3/8 drive, make sure you have good 3/8 stuff or a good reducer!

They've all got a hex on the outside of them but I don't know whether you'll be able to fit a socket in there to use it
